Day 2 on Rottnest and this is how I decided to capture my day, through windows!
1. Trying to find the Bunker
After walking about 15 mins down this road we realised (not long) we were walking in the wrong direction but decided to keep going to explore. After all we had no place to be and not on a time schedule! And Ms M was keen and enthusiastic on finding this illusive bunker to sketch.
2. Caught in the Storm and Nowhere to Hide
Continuing with our adventure, and some of us weren’t sketchers or artists we headed towards the coast with a spring in our step and happily taking in the sights of the Rottnest bushland. With a sudden pause in our stride as we looked ahead we could see a storm rapidly approaching us. And yes no where to hide! Under a tree? hmmmmm. At least one of us had a big poncho raincoat! ….it wasn’t me 🙁
3. On the Bus
Fortunately, the island tour bus was heading towards us. I didn’t care at all that it was going to cost $20 for the day and that we had just done the same tour the day before. I just wanted to be dry and get to somewhere where there was shelter. You see we were quite a distance from anywhere with any shelter, just road and bushland. And I wasn’t about to walk back in the heavy rain.
4. I’m Hungry Now…it’s time to eat!
Oh man!! the bus ride was 40 mins (and like I said we saw it all the day before!) I was starving!! DOME Cafe for a chicken and veggie soup and with some crusty bread please….. and a big glass of fresh OJ. Perfect! Ahhhhhh! I think I could easily have had another bowl of soup. I absolutely LOVE soup! Geez I feel like some now as I write this 🙂
5. Time for Jetty Sketching
There was a slight chill in the air but at the same time a little bit humid too. It doesn’t help when I have very thick and a lot of hair. After enjoying my soupy lunch I`finally decided that I would sketch this gorgeous jetty from my table. One because I have an obsession with jetties and two because I’ve never really sketched a somewhat complicated scene.
6. Sweets Anyone ?
Now why is it that we are conditioned to have sweets after a meal? DOME was closing and my sketching buddy felt like something sweet….but so did I of course. What’s open? Hey the bakery is still open! Mmmmmm Vanilla Slice , thick slab of custard with flaky pastry. So bad but yet so so good! Vanilla slices always reminds me of being in primary school and morning recess. A real treat for a little Chinese girl.
7. Finally! Dinner time 🙂
I got the afternoon lull where I just needed to nap! But I don’t think I did . Probably because I was too full and had a food baby! haha.
I just had a craving for a decent serve of fish and chips, so yes I was thinking about dinner already. Given it was our second night we headed to the Rottnest Pub to have a feed, having cooked in our lodge the night before (it was our little treat from having such an adventurous day).
I’m not a big batter girl but damn my fish was fantastic and so were my chips, despite not finishing either.
To sum day 2 up in three words : adventurous, somewhat gluttonous and fun!
Just in case you missed Day 1 it’s here Day 1 Rottnest 🙂
