So finally here I am Day 1 on my overseas sketching trip!
Rottnest Island is overseas right? I did have to cross the Indian Ocean to get here 🙂
Well, to be honest this is actually Day 2 because Day 1 (or zero) we didn’t do too much but relaxed, chilled and paced up and down the beach getting our feet wet in the cool-ish but somewhat warm water just outside our cottage.
My first Rotto Sketch
I don’t often do standing sketches, I would say 99% of the time I’m sitting. And now I know why I don’t sketch standing. It’s too awkward and my left hand goes numb holding my sketchbook.
Anyway this little cottage was too cute to not sketch.
I somehow managed to convince the others that it was Rottnest Street we were on, I was actually being facetious because I had no idea what street we were on. Well it was Brand Street as one of the others discovered. After everyone had written Rottnest Street in the sketchbooks….Oops!!! 🙂
Not the lighthouse we were looking for…..
Having decided to jump on the “tour” bus we headed off around the island in search of THE lighthouse that MM was talking about. Thinking it would only be a 5 minute ride according to the map, it ended up being 40 mins across to the other side of the island to another light house. I had no idea that there was more than one light house on such a small island!
It really didn’t matter that this wasn’t the “right” lighthouse. The view was spectacular and the history behind it was interesting.
I have to admit my legs did a little wobbly walking up the spiral staircase (157 steps), although they’re levels to stop at along the way. My internal dialogue kept telling me that if I can rock climb then why am I so concerned?!
I got there in the end and enjoyed the view.
We had 40 mins to spare
So we decided it was plenty of time to sketch before we had to walk down the hill to catch the bus back.
I was secretly excited, not because I was out sketching (well that was partly it) but because I finally got to use my “ultimate” sketching stool that I purposely bought for my sketchventures. My virgin stool. It only weighs 200grams and is very comfortable.
Today was a perfect day for sketching outside on Rottnest.
