A Novel in a Year by Louise Doughty.
I was fortunate enough to acquire this book from my local Buy Nothing community recently.
It’s not actually about writing a novel in a year but applying practical weekly writing habits and exercises to get momentum with your writing. It’s designed to be read a chapter a week with practical exercise.
I’ve only just started reading this book.
Below is week 1’s writing exercise. Write one sentence beginning with the following (I wrote more than one sentence) :
The day after my 8th birthday my father told me ….
I could be anything I wanted to be. He told me there wasn’t a limit to who I could become or what I wanted to do in my life. I didn’t really understand it at the time but I listened. I listened because he was my dad. I listened because my dad was wise and had a temperament that soothed and comforted me. He gave me confidence and belief. I listened because I respected him.
I could be who I wanted to be and I could do whatever I wanted to do in my life.
I believed it because I believed in my dad, and he believed in me.
